Parent's
Time Out
August 3, 2001
Welcome to our new addition to the OnLine
Exchange. Running an online business
or working outside of the home takes much
time and effort away from your family. This new weekly feature will be committed to helping parents take back that quality time and
devote it more fully to spending it with their children. Here is where you can start to take a Time Out from the TV, computer, housework, and bills. It only takes a few minutes to do fun and memorable things
with your children and we will lend a hand each week to get you started. Tune in here for encouragement, fun and easy things to do,
and other tidbits, all geared just for you and your precious ones.

the Week
Green Eggs and Ham
Here's something that your kids AND you will have fun with, at least I
did. A friend mentioned to me one time that someone they knew was such a
cool mom, that she even had made Green Eggs & Ham for her
kids. Oh, I had to try that one RIGHT away! It was very fun, and
my daughter asks everyone if they have tried them, cause she has. If you
get the notion, why not set aside a morning's breakfast for this leap
into Dr. Seuss land?
All we (don't forget, let the kids help) did was scramble some eggs with
some green food coloring. Then, I had some ham on hand and soaked
it in water with green food coloring also. It doesn't take long for that
green to soak in, then put it in the frying pan and heat it up.
That's all there is to it!
The hard part comes in making yourself take the first bite. Kids don't
care, but it was really hard to convince myself that it was just regular
eggs. They looked more like minty globs. So, get past the first
and second bites, and you will be right up there with all the coolest
parents.
Oh, and very important:
Don't forget to get the "Green Eggs and Ham" book around. If
you don't own it, plan ahead and get to the library.
You see, it isn't hard to do fun things with your kids. This is JUST
breakfast, with a twist. The main thing to keep in mind is you don't
HAVE to think all of this stuff up on your own. There is nothing wrong
with using other people's ideas. It makes it so much simple! Then have
fun and use your imagination...next week make breakfast purple eggs and
ham!

Dinner?
Paper
Bag Baked Chicken
Here's a unique
and easy way to roast a whole chicken! The result is chicken that is
moist and tender with a delicious roasted
flavor--despite its unusual cooking times
and temperatures.
- 3 1/2 to 4 pound
whole chicken
- 1 large onion,
peeled
- 1 lemon, sliced with
peel
- 1 tablespoon
vegetable or olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt, or
to taste
- Freshly ground
pepper to taste
- 1 large clean brown
paper bag
- Preheat oven to
450*F (230*C).
- Clean chicken
inside and out; thoroughly dry. Freeze
neck and giblets for other uses or discard. Brush
or rub oil over the outside of chicken. Distribute
the salt and pepper evenly inside and out.
- Next place the
whole, peeled onion and lemon slices
inside the cavity of chicken. Place
chicken into brown paper bag. Place
bagged chicken into a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking
dish. Making sure paper bag is rolled up tightly
and tucked underneath chicken.
- Place chicken
into oven and bake for 1 hour. Reduce
heat to 350*F (175*C) and continue baking
for 1 hour more. (Total cooking time: 2 hours.)
- Remove chicken
and let set undisturbed for 10
minutes before serving to allow juices to be reabsorbed.
- Serve the
cooked onion with the chicken, or discard
as you prefer.

~ Just for You
Here's more on creating your own home spa.
* Use aromatic candles and music or
relaxation tape's to create a calming atmosphere.
* Fill a basket with bath brushes,
exfoliating massage gloves, essential oils, bath salts and perhaps some
bath toys, and keep it-handy near the tub.
* For relaxation, use essential oils like
chamomile or marjoram. To boost your mood, try clary sage or grapefruit
oils. Add a total of 6 drops to a tub of water (after filling, so the
oils don't evaporate) or sprinkle oils in all four corners of the shower
stall when taking a shower and breathe in the aroma.
How are you doing on your weekly goal? (Remember, set aside time just
for you.)
