Parent's
Time Out
August 17, 2001
This weekly feature of the Online Exchange
is committed to helping parents take back quality time and
devote it more fully to spending it with their children. Here is where you can start to take a Time Out from the TV, computer, housework, and bills. It only takes a few minutes to do fun and memorable things
with your children and we will lend a hand each week to get you started. Tune in here for encouragement, fun and easy things to do,
and other tidbits, all geared just for you and your precious ones.
~ Time Out for
the Week
Well, it's that time of year again. Kids are heading back to school.
It's fun and scary all at the same time. I thought this would be fun for
a back to school treat for the whole family. The little ones that aren't
quite big enough might help make it as a surprise for their older
siblings, or it would make a great project for those of you who are
taking the plunge, like me, into home-school. Whatever the case, it will
add some edible fun to get school off to a great start!
Give 'Em A Big Kiss!
by Beau
You will need:
1/4 cup margarine or butter
1- 10 oz package of marshmallows, mini or regular size (4 cups total)
5 cups Rice Krispy-type cereal, regular or chocolate
Large bowl and spoon
cooking spray or oil/shortening
foil
piece of thin cardboard
scissors
waxed paper
plate
two baggies
paper
felt-tipped pen
an adult to help you
Instructions:
1. Spray microwave-safe, large mixing
bowl with cooking spray so mixture won't stick. Place marshmallows and
margarine in bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Mix well.
2. Microwave on high for one minute more
and then stir. Be careful not to burn yourself on the hot
marshmallow-margarine mix. Get an adult to help you.
3. Add cereal and stir until coated. Let
mixture cool for a few minutes while you make base of big kiss.
4. Trace a plate onto piece of thin
cardboard and cut out. Trace again on waxed paper and cut out.
5. Make an "x" out of two
sheets of foil, then place cardboard circle in the center, followed by
waxed paper. This is the base and the wrapping for the kiss.
6. Spray two baggies with cooking spray
and place on hands (cooking spray side out!) . Place cooled krispy mix
onto waxed paper and cardboard circles and shape into kiss. The baggies
will keep your hands from getting yucky.
7.When you've shaped your kiss the way
you like it, spray the inside of the foil with cooking spray (so kiss
won't stick to it) and lift foil sides towards top of kiss, wrapping to
look like Hershey Kiss.
8. Write a special message or "Big
Kiss" on a thin strip of white paper. Crepe paper works good
too.
To eat: Have an adult cut it with a knife
and eat wedges of the Big Kiss. My favorite kind is chocolate- yum!
Note: You can use this idea to wrap
cookies, candies and other homemade treats as a giant kiss.

Back to School ENERGY, How to get it!
Back to school can mean that much more you have to juggle as a parent.
We need more energy now that the summer break is coming to a close. Take
advantage of the peace in the house, if there is any, and set a goal to
go for a walk every day. Even if you can only go 15 minutes a day, which
isn't really very long when you think off how long we sit behind the
computer, you can increase your energy level. By making yourself walk
each day, for any amount of time, your energy level will begin
increasing within a few weeks.
You might not have a good place to walk, but think of a local park or
track or a friend's neighborhood that you can take advantage of. That
can even make you feel like you are really getting away from it all and
you will feel so much better if you just put forth the effort.
Most importantly, don't forget- be smart about the heat and definitely
leave the cell phone at home. You can't relieve stress by taking your
work with you.
