This weekly feature of the Online Exchange
is committed to helping parents take back quality time and
devote it more fully to spending it with their children. Here is where you can start to take a Time Out from the TV, computer, housework, and bills. It only takes a few minutes to do fun and memorable things
with your children and we will lend a hand each week to get you started. Tune in here for encouragement, fun and easy things to do,
and other tidbits, all geared just for you and your precious ones.
~ Time Out for
the Week
Magnetizing!
Here are a few neat things to do to
teach your kids about magnets. Each only takes a few moments, and you
will have as much fun learning as your kids do!
Let's go fishing...
~In a box, have your child put several different things such as- a penny,
a nickel, a dime, a twig, tacks, screws, nails, paper clips, bits of
aluminum foil, rubber bands, pieces of paper, and a safety pin or two.
~Next, find a magnet. It can even be a letter magnet from the fridge.
Tie one end of string around the magnet and the other around a pencil.
This is the fishing pole.
~Have your child go fishing in the box and then put the things they
catch in a
pile.
~Talk about the things that your child lifted out of the box. They are
all made with iron.
Make your own magnet...
~Have your child hold a needle at the eye, being very careful not to
stick themselves.
~Let them stroke the needle along one end of a magnet. This has to be
done only in one direction about 20 or 30 times.
~Now have them touch the end of the needle to a tack, paper clip or
another needle. If the needle does not pick them up, stroke it across
the magnet a few more times.
Make your own compass...
~Using your needle magnet, stick two small pieces of foam plastic or
cork on to the needle, one on each end.
~Float the needle in a bowl of water. Keep it in the middle.
~The needle will swing around to the north each time you move it. Put a
dot of ink on the north end.
~Talk about the Earth being a huge magnet and how people use compasses.
~Now, make another needle magnet and move it close to one end of the
compass. It will either move toward the needle or away. Talk about how
the north-seeking poles of the magnets repel each other and the
north-seeking pole and the south-seeking pole attract each other.
Chilling...
~Open your refrigerator door, and explain to your child that the door
holds tight because of a magnet under the plastic strip.
~Have them test it with a paper clip. The door will hold the clip.

find it in your library.

~ Just for You
Take a break
When you aren't tending to your everyday
chores, do you find that all of your time is spent at the computer?
Well, this week set aside at least an afternoon for just you, keeping it
simple, without checking email or anything! Then make it a habit. It
will do you a world of good.
